Footballove

by Camila Garcia 10B         As you all know, the FIFA World Cup 2018 took place last July in Russia. The world cup is the official international all-men football tournament where almost 70 teams get together in different matches to fight for the place as the greatest football selection worldwide. It is played every 4 years since 1930 except in 1942 and 1946 due to WW2. I´m pretty sure that all around the globe everyone is waiting for either the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup. So, when your country´s football selection gets a spot between the top 70 soccer teams, it´s pretty exciting. But the world cup is much more than soccer. It is tears, laughter, a clash of different cultures, unity and most importantly love.

As afore mentioned, this year it was Russia´s turn to be the host for this extremely important event. And even though it was far from Colombia, our country, an amazing and unbelievable 65 thousand Colombians went to watch their family play. I believe that the season when people are the proudest of being whatever their nationality is, is when their country is succeeding. That, for me, is the case. Some may not understand because, after all, Colombia did not win the world cup, not even the fourth place. But what I think matters the most is the effort the 11 players and the coach put in what is their everyday job.

Sports are one of the main activities that unite the world population. It is that way because sports are emotion rollercoasters. They make you consider everyone that lives in your country as family. And, the fact that this event is only played every 4 years, makes-up the mystic and magic. It cannot be played every year or month because it would lose the main purpose which, from my point of view, is promoting the world´s unity. Something amazing was that even if your country was not in the finals, people from everywhere went to support the teams, regardless of the country. Everyone was there supporting everyone.

This year’s winning team was the France National Football team (Équipe de France de football). Their colors are blue, red and white and the Gaelic Rooster is their symbol. France was also the first national team that has won the three most important men’s titles recognized by FIFA the World Cup, the Confederations Cup, and the Olympic tournament after victory in the Confederations Cup in 2001. The team is a representation of the ethnic diversity the country has. As of July, 2018, they were managed by Didier Dechamps and coached by Grégory Dupont. People from all around the world supported not only them, but also the runner-up team: Croatia.

I personally watched every single match from the 2018 world cup. I cried, screamed at the tv and cheered for every team. It was with no doubt the best time of my vacation. And the sense of belonging in every country is priceless, everyone had body paint according to their team´s colors. That is the unity the world needs at all times. Soccer gives us the unity we need. And even though the world does not live in this type of harmony 365 days a year, it is amazing to know that the unity, love and support is within us humans.

Basketball, the deaf sport of the school

As you may know, the school has a fabulous basketball team, although this is not as recognized as the volleyball or cheers squad. Basketball is a sport that has been since the beginning of our loved school.

For the first years of school, basketball was a sport with a great relevance, but nowadays things have changed. The team isn’t as big as it used to be and the support of the school is minimum.

I had the opportunity to talk with the captain of the team, Maria Paula Caparroso of 10th grade, to know more about the situation. “This year the number of girls increased a lot. We passed from being 8 girls to be 15, practically the number of girls was doubled.  Also, this year we have a new coach, and new projects like the camp of Orlando magic, a NBA team, next June.” These are some words Maria Paula said.

Also, I wanted to ask her how the team was doing for the past years, since she has been there for a long time. Maria Paula said that past years were difficult times in the team due to the problems they had. “The team was made up of many girls until 8th grade, in that year we had lots of conflicts between the group, which made many people make the decision to leave. Also, in 6th grade the team had a crisis, and almost every girl from high school went out, since there the number of girls decreased. But with that first crisis, the team wasn’t so affected as the second one. This year after all the crisis we have increased our number of members and we hope this remains like this for a long time.” After talking with Maria Paula, I noticed that the situation with the basketball team is improving in a great way.

In our school there is no great initiative to go and cheer up the basketball matches, and we should start doing it because we have to support our girls even if they are in volleyball, cheers, “barras”, football or basketball team. Basketball is very different to all sports, it needs a very good physical condition, tactic, technique and strategy. It is a sport that takes all of your senses to be in the game in which you have to be prepared for everything. Basketball is a complete science, that many people don’t have the opportunity to know about.

In conclusion, we can see that our Basketball team has been very important, but for many students it is a sport that many people don’t know about but has been always there. And for the members of the team it is a way to live and enjoy life. Basketball is a sport with little noise in school that needs more support.
